February 1, 2024: within the framework of
Anton Chekhov's 164th birthday
commemorative events, a new museum,
House of Pavel Chekhov known as "The Family Seat", was officially unveiled to the public.
The Chekhovs moved to the building on former Ulitsa Kontorskaya (the latest address - Ulitsa Rosy Luxemburg 77) 150 years ago, in 1874. Here Anton Chekhov wrote his first play and early short stories. Now the exhibition areas of this new addition into the Taganrog Group of Museums (TGLIAMZ) cover all three years of
Anton Chekhov's life in this very house (1876-1879).
The museum consists of five exhibition halls, provided with modern multimedia technologies. As a result, the House of Pavel Chekhov can offer its visitors not only exclusive showpieces but also video projections voiced by prominent actors.
"The museum is unique. I am sure that it will become part of all tourist routes as a cultural site. Taganrog is already an attractor for everyone interested in Russian literature. But from now on, the real connoisseurs will all the more enjoy the city," said Taganrog-born Deputy Chairwoman of the Federation Council Inna Svyatenko.
The building of the would-be House of Pavel Chekhov was bought up from private owners in 2010. The permanent exhibit was created in 2023 in the framework of the plans on integrated development of Taganrog as a tourist destination.
