January 30, 2024: yesterday, on January 29, the opening ceremony to unveil a new monument to
Anton Chekhov was held in the city of Seoul, the Republic of Korea (South Korea). Deputy of Rostov Oblast Legislative Assembly and director of Taganrog Chekhov Public Library Tatyana Mikheyeva greeted the participants of the ceremony in the remote mode.
The initiative belongs to the South Korean non-profit organization "Anton Chekhov Academic Community," which is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its establishment. The organization does not merely aim at the promotion of Chekhov's literary heritage but maintains its own drama school and theater, where many Chekhov's plays have been performed over the years.
Further to the unveiling of the new Chekhov monument, representative of "Anton Chekhov Academic Community" Marina Pyreva arrived in Taganrog on January 28. She was staying for two days in order to prepare a video report on
commemorative events in Chekhov's home city. Accompanied by Taganrog Foreign Relations Officer Alexander Mirgorodsky, Marina Pyreva participated in flower-laying ceremony and visited Chekhov museums. The resulting video report is to be submitted to South Korean media outlets and social networks.
