Archaeology students from Faiyum, Egypt visit Taganrog

August 12, 2019: Fayoum University's Faculty of Archaeology students visited the city of Taganrog. The delegation was headed by Dr. Walid Ali Mahmoud - director of the Department of Islamic Archaeology.

Egyptian students visited the Taganrog Museum of Architecture and Urbanism, which recently reopened after a major exhibition update, the most important Anton Chekhov memorial sites and Taganrog's historic downtown area - museums "Birth House of Anton Chekhov" and "Chekhovs' Shop", Old Stone Steps, Pushkin Embankment, Peter the Great Monument, etc.

The guests also met Taganrog archaeologist Alexander Birinov, who told about German-Russian archaeological excavations of Emporion Kremnoi near the Old Stone Steps, conducted in 2004-2008 by German Archaeological Institute (Berlin, Germany) in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), the Don-Archaeological Society (Rostov-on-Don, Russia).

The visit was made in the framework of a tripartite agreement between the Southern Federal University (SFEDU), Azov Museum-Preserve of History, Archaeology and Paleontology, and Fayoum University (Faiyum, Egypt). The 10-day program of stay is very rich in different events, meetings with SFEDU lecturing staff and history students, joint research and information exchange about forthcoming publications and events.

Besides Taganrog, Egyptian students spent 4 days in the city of Azov to visit local museums and labs, to meet art restorers, and to participate in archaeological excavations of the medieval town of Azak.
