Jining, Shandong, China

Jining is situated in the southwest of Shandong Province, China. It is one of the key industrial cites of the province, governing two districts, three cities and seven counties,namely, Shizhong District, Rencheng District, Qufu, Yanzhou, Zoucheng, Weishan County, Yutai County, Jinxiang County, Jiaxiang County, Sishui County, Liangshan County. It covers an area of 11,000 square kilometers, with a population of 8.2275 million.

Jining, which is the birthplace of the world-famous thinkers and educators Confucius and Mencius, has long been praised as "the Hometown of Confucius and Mencius, the Land of Proprieties" and the cradle of Confucianism. Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion and Confucius Forest in Qufu have been included on the list of World Culture Heritage by United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO). The annually celebrated "International Confucius Culture Festival in (Qufu) China" attracts both domestic and international friends to the holy city. Moreover, there are many other places of interest such as "the Four Sites on Mencius", namely, Mencius Mansion, Mencius Temple, Mencius Forest and Mencius' Mother Forest in Zoucheng, Water Margin in Liangshan County, Weishan Lake, the stone carvings of Han Dynasty in Jiaxiang County, and the Pagoda of Buddha in Wenshang County and so on.

Jining enjoys good geographic location and convenient transportation and communication. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway go through the city from south to north; Yanzhou-Shijiu Railway and Jining-Xinxiang Railway through the city from east to west. Beijing-Fuzhou Expressway, Rizhao-Dongming Expressway and 4 national highways, 8 provincial main highways go through the city. Jining Qufu Airport, with direct flight to domestic cities like Guangzhou, has been put in use. Furthermore, the newly built Beijing-Shanghai Express Railway goes through Jining, with one stop in Qufu. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal goes through the city, and transportation in the canal is developed. Jining is only 200 kilometers away from Rizhao port, and 400 kilometers from Qingdao port. With the speeding of the restructuring of postal and telecommunications sectors, there are now the internet services covering both the urban and rural areas.

With its sound and rapid development, the comprehensive economy power of Jining ranks among the top of the seventeen medium and large-sized cities in Shandong. In 2008, the GDP of the city totaled RMB 212.216 billion Yuan, increasing by 13.1% compared with last year. The local fiscal revenue reached RMB 11.945 billion Yuan, increasing by 18%. The volume of import and export totaled 3.268 billion US dollars, up 23.7%; the volume of export amounted to 1.865 billion US dollars, increasing by 8.2%, and import 1.403 billion US dollars, up 52.7%. The value of direct foreign investment was 388 million US dollars, increasing by 22.9%. The revenue brought by tourism reached RMB14.65 billion Yuan, up 20.2%. The investment in fixed assets amounted to RMB 81.6 billion Yuan, increasing by 24.8%. The total retail sales of consumer goods were RMB 72.83 billion Yuan, up 23.2%. The disposable income of urban residents reached RMB16,873 Yuan, up 13.3%; and the net income of rural residents was RMB 5,965 Yuan, up 13.2%. The per-capita GDP has reached RMB 26,721 Yuan (about 3,848 US dollars), increasing by 12.4%. Besides, the balance of the deposits of urban and rural residents was RMB 88.82 billion Yuan.

The agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery developed in an all-around way. The sown area of grain in Jining totaled 594,300 hectares with a total output of 4.169 million tons and 468 kilos per mu; the area of woodland added up to 221,000 hectares with the forest coverage of 26%; the aquiculture area was 40,700 hectares, with an output of 304,000 tons. In addition, the total power of agricultural machinery amounted to 7.951 million kilowatt-hour.

People's Government of Shandong Province has positioned Jining as one of the three key economic zones and the three metropolitan areas along with Jinan and Qingdao in the 11th Five-Year Plan. By 2010, Jining will be built into an industrial center, a city known by cultural tourism, a city well-structured, and resources-development-oriented economic zone. The city construction and environment protection of Jining will be positioned as the Hometown of Confucius and Mencius, the capital of the Grand Canal, Water City suitable for living.
