Violin players from Taganrog at the Cleethorpes
Festival of Music and Words (England)

July 4, 2005: The 14-year old Julia Chernobai and the 9-year old Christina Takha gave a performance at the international competition of young musicians, which was held under patronage of Elizabeth II, the Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The girls' success was witnessed by the British living along Don River in Yorkshire that flows through the cities of Manchester, Sheffield, Doncaster into North Sea.

Julia Chernobai took three first places and was awarded the Grand Prize for the most complex musical composition. The jury has given Julia the highest score. Christina Takha was also ranked first three times. Nikolay Shmelev of Taganrog Tchaikovsky Music School is the teacher of both girls, and his students have already been recognized and awarded at several international contests before.

The trio from Taganrog has also performed on stage and was invited to participate in the next year's contest, and the young British expressed their wish of visiting the city of Taganrog, the birthplace of Anton Chekhov. This may be the beginning of a strong and lasting friendship between musicians of the Russian Don Cossacks region and the English Don.
