July 18, 2022 - The home city of
Anton Chekhov paid tribute to 118 years since the day the world-famous playwright and short-story writer passed away in
Badenweiler, Germany.
On this day residents of Taganrog traditionally participate in the flower laying ceremony at the foot of Chekhov monument. In this sense the year 2022 was no exception.
"On this day, the day of remembrance, people come here not by order, but by the call of the heart. We owe a lot to
Anton Chekhov; we feel his presence in the cultural life of the city, in every corner of our Taganrog. To follow Chekhov's lead, to be useful to Taganrog - this is what we should all strive for. Only then can Taganrog become a truly flourishing city, which was so dreamed of by Anton Chekhov", Taganrog City Council President and City Executive Inna Titarenko said.
Furthermore, an event entitled "With Chekhov's Book in Our Garden" was held in the Taganrog Chekhov Public Library on July 15. The visitors had the opportunity to learn more about the different stages of Chekhov's life, watch performances on a number of his stories, and listen to the music of the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, who enjoyed warm relations with Chekhov.
We would like to take the opportunity and once again invite you to participate in the
international reading and literature project "The World Reads Chekhov". Every participant will receive a digital participation certificate.
