International festival of Russian-Ukrainian friendship "Shevchenko Spring-2014" to start at Taganrog

January 21, 2014: Mayor of Taganrog Vladimir Prasolov met with Mr. Moskalenko, the Ukrainian Consul-General in Rostov on Don and Mr. Makarchuk, chairman of the Ukrainian national cultural autonomy of Rostov Oblast.

The meeting held in the mayor's office was dedicated to celebrating the upcoming Ukrainian and Russian poet and playwright Taras Shevchenko's bicentenary.

"It's very hard to find two nations as closely associated as Russian and Ukrainian people. The borders that separate our countries cannot impair the friendship between our countries. We are willing to strengthen our cultural and humanitarian cooperation", said Ukrainian Consul.

Vladimir Makarchuk, chairman of the regional Ukrainian ethnic community organization suggested starting the international festival of Russian-Ukrainian friendship "Shevchenko Spring 2014" in Taganrog on March 9, 2014 - the day of Taras Shevchenko bicentennial.

In his address, Mayor Prasolov confirmed his support for the international festival: "Taganrog has long historical, cultural and trade relations with the Ukraine. The city has four Ukrainian partner cities: Mariupol, Odessa, Khartsyzsk and Antratsyt. Works by Shevchenko are part of Russian state education program and this is why the festival event will be interesting to teachers, students and citizens of Taganrog. We have broad experience in holding international festivals and events, and that is why we are sure to make it a high level festival opening ceremony".

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed that the best art groups of Taganrog, Rostov Oblast, Lugansk Oblast (Ukraine) and Donetsk Oblast (Ukraine) will be participating in the festival opening in Taganrog.
