November 3, 2011 - President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev signed an executive order conferring the honorary title of City of Military Glory on the city of Taganrog "for the courage, fortitude and mass heroism displayed by the cities' defenders in the fight for freedom and independence of the Fatherland."

On the same day the citizens of Taganrog, war veterans, representatives of Taganrog Local Government, Taganrog City Council, delegations of factories, educational institutions and other public organizations gathered in front of the Peter the Great monument. This mass meeting was led by Mr. Yuri Stefanov, Chair of the City Duma. After the national anthem of Russian Federation and the anthem of Taganrog City were performed, Nikolay Fedyanin, Mayor of Taganrog had the floor. In his address to the rally, Mayor Fedyanin said the following:

"Today is a great day. On the eve of the public holiday - the Day of National Unity - President of Russian Federation Dmitri Anatolievich Medvedev signed an executive order conferring the honorary title of City of Military Glory on the city of Taganrog.

This means that the tomorrow's celebration of the Day of National Unity is brightened with new colors. The great contribution of Taganrog into defense of our Motherland has been recognized on the highest level. The citizens of Taganrog regardless of descent or religious beliefs have always demonstrated the example of unity and citizens' solidarity and heroism in difficult periods of our history - in the same way as the all-Russian volunteer army of Minin and Pozharsky did - being one united nation living in one country.

We respect our history and we revere our ancestors, we value their experience, which even after four centuries gives us strong confidence in goal achievement.

We all want Russia to be a prosperous and worldwide-respected country. This is why Russian Federation's policy of joining all constructive forces aimed at political stability and growth in well-being of the people finds support among the citizens of Taganrog.

Joining our forces we follow this path, and as our ancestors did, we will prevail, multiplying the greatness and glory of Russia. The title of the "City of Military Glory" is a worthy monument to our forefathers who gave their lives defending the country not waiting for any award in return. We, their successors, received this award for them. It imposes high responsibility. We will always revere the memory of our fathers and grandfathers, never disgracing their honor and glory.
