Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Visited Museum of Military History "Sambek Heights"

August 16, 2021: the Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov visited Rostov Oblast within the framework of a working trip on August 13. He discussed a lot of problems with Rostov Oblast Governor Vasily Golubev, with the focus on region's foreign economic activities.

"Rostov Oblast is among the leaders in terms of international contacts and foreign investments. We will be assisting you in every way possible", underlined the Minister.

Sergey Lavrov, accompanied by Vasily Golubev, visited the Peoples' Museum of Military History "Sambek Heights", which is a part of Taganrog Group of Museums. He viewed the exhibition entitled "Don Region in the Great Patriotic War, 1941-1945". The Minister and Governor laid flowers at the monument to the Victorious Soviet Soldier.

Russian foreign minister also met with civil society actors on the premises of "Sambek Heights". The topic was "Civil Society and State Defending Historical Truth, Values, and Sovereignty of Russia". During the meeting, Lavrov commended the role of regional voluntary search groups in establishing "Sambek Heights". In particular, remains of Soviet warriors, having been found by volunteers, were buried on the local Alley of Memory; military equipment of the Great Patriotic War was also dug up by search parties and afterwards showcased in the museum. Thus, Minister offered the regional community to take the initiative in inaugurating the Searcher Day and expressed his willingness to support this initiative.

On the same day, Sergey Lavrov and Vasily Golubev met medallists of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The Minister said that Russia intended to apply for hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics. So Governor offered to include Rostov-on-Don in the list of Olympic cities. In return, Sergey Lavrov indicated that Rostov Oblast met all the requirements to hold any events, including ones of international level. Yelena Osipova, who claimed her first silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo as a member of the ROC women's national archery team and her second silver medal in women's individual archery event, attended the meeting as well.
