September 28, 2022: Chairwoman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, Rostov Oblast Governor Vasily Golubev, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia for Construction and Regional Development Marat Khusnullin, Minister of Finance Anton Siluanov and Chairman of State Development Corporation VEB.RF Igor Shuvalov launched the modernized
Taganrog Streetcar System after major improvement works within the framework of
Taganrog's urban revitalization program.
The renewed routes 5 and 6 with brand-new low-floor and Wi-Fi enabled streetcars with air conditioning systems resumed their operation, offering free rides for the first two days. The special guests visited the new
streetcar depot, traffic control center, checked that the project
"A Window to Taganrog" operates correctly. By reading the QR code using a mobile phone camera, passengers can open an audio program to listen stories from the history of Taganrog.
The whole 28.5-mile streetcar network has been modernized in two stages. Three weeks ago the renewed
route 4 and temporary route 9 began their passenger service.
Route 3 and
route 2 were launched earlier as a part of the first phase of Taganrog streetcar system's renovation. The city received 50 new vehicles, 8 new electric substations, 102 passenger shelters, streetcar depot and the traffic control center. Besides, "Sinara" improved the
open-air dance pavilion in Taganrog's Gorky Park in August 2021.
Valentina Matvienko and other special guests gave a high appraisal of the improvement works. "The residents of Taganrog expressed their opinion about this project. They are very happy. Rostov Oblast Government and concession operator did everything to modernize and launch all streetcar routes before the scheduled date. The project has proved successful. It's all under supervision of the Federation Council and it's taken to task to extend this experience to other regions", highlighted Chairwoman of the Federation Council.
