Exhibition "The Great Silent Cinema" opens in Taganrog

July 4, 2025: today the new exhibition entitled "The Great Silent Cinema" has been unveiled to the public at the Taganrog Museum of Architecture and Urbanism.

"The Great Silent Cinema" is dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the opening of the first cinemas in Taganrog. Visitors to the exhibition will see about 50 movie posters and placards from the 1890s-1910s, photo portraits of famous silent-screen actors, images of the facades and interiors of the first Taganrog cinemas, and much more besides. The exhibit items were provided by the State Museum of the History of Saint Petersburg and the Taganrog Group of Museums (TGLIAMZ).

Russia made its first acquaintance with cinema in 1896, when the films of the Lumière brothers were shown in the city of Saint Petersburg. In July 1897, the residents of Taganrog saw the first session of "Lumière's cinematograph by electric light" at the city theater.

Visitors and residents of the city are welcome to see "The Great Silent Cinema" Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Taganrog Museum of Architecture and Urbanism at Ulitsa Frunze, 80. The exhibition will run until September 14.
